The R11 series was replaced with the R12 series, which had the same size side-valve engine. This engine became a primary mover for BMW up through World War II. The R11 series was first made in 1929 and was produced till 1935, with a total of 75,000 being manufactured over its production run. BMW's relatively vibration-free engine was already a byword for smoothness and refinement, and this, coupled to a 3-speed, shaft-drive transmission, made the R11 side-valve one of the finest touring motorcycles of its day. The transversely mounted flat-twin engine was already a BMW trademark, but for the first time it was installed in a pressed-steel frame, the first model to incorporate this landmark of motorcycle design being the 740cc R11. Shortly after venturing into car manufacture for the first time by acquiring the Dixi works at Eisenach, BMW introduced a major innovation to its motorcycle range in 1929. ![]()
